For this Self-Portrait involving Florence project, I chose to focus on type design partially to involve it with my Graphic Design major as well as the type design I have been appreciating while being in Florence. This is mostly included in the restaurant signs and different stores which I have taken to notice while walking around which have a unique mix of modern and classical type design. With this, I wanted to use a word that is in relation to my experience since I have been in Florence. The word is “serene”, which is how Florence makes me feel. The colors overall I wanted to connect with the beautiful sunsets as well as the bright orange color on many of the buildings. To create this composition I used different elements involving Florence. The one element that seemed to work the best for the composition was the scaffolding so I stuck with this theme for all of the letters. I wanted to also connect all of the letters to seem like they are building together. While this may not seem like a "serene" composition I think it is important to show that through all of the chaos Florence is still a serene place in many ways. The scaffolding was incorporated to make the connection to show how important it is for Florence to preserve and hold the important pieces of the city together.
